PhotoCraft vs VectorCraft: the difference

PhotoCraft primarily edits raster images: the pixel-based material in photographs and layered image compositions. VectorCraft primarily edits vector geometry: the curves and shapes used for scalable illustrations. PhotoCraft also has shape and path tools, so the distinction describes focus rather than an absolute boundary.

Features and development status below are based on official documentation reviewed on October 11, 2026. We have not independently tested these applications.

When to use PhotoCraft

Photo retouching and layers

Use an image-editing workflow when you want to change brightness, combine pictures, mask part of a layer or preserve photographic texture. Those tasks work on the picture rather than redraw it as a set of flat shapes.

PSD projects

PhotoCraft documents PSD support, while its roadmap records compatibility limitations. Test copies of representative projects and keep your originals before using it in a shared production workflow.

When to use VectorCraft

Logos, SVG and editable paths

Use a vector workflow when shape geometry and scaling matter. After tracing, manual path editing can correct corners, close gaps or simplify contours. Check destination-software requirements before using the artwork for a cutter or print job.

Image tracing

The project lists image tracing as a feature. It connects a raster starting image to a vector result, but does not guarantee that every texture or fine detail survives the conversion.

Do you need both?

Sometimes. You might clean up a scanned drawing in a photo editor, then trace it and refine the outline in a vector editor. A project that only needs a cropped photo can stop after image editing; a shape drawn from scratch can begin directly in the vector editor.

The two apps are independent Crafting Apps from the ArtCraft team. Their relationship does not prove perfect file exchange or require you to use the AI studio. Check the formats needed at each step.

The shortcut: convert a photo to vector without either app

For a single SVG, use our local browser converter: 1. Choose one JPG, PNG or WebP up to 20 MB. 2. Adjust detail and smoothing, then convert. 3. Inspect and download the SVG. No editor installation or account is required, and conversions are unlimited.

This route produces paths you can continue editing elsewhere. It does not replace a full photo editor, recover missing image detail or guarantee that artwork is ready for a particular cutting machine.

Frequently asked questions

Is VectorCraft better than PhotoCraft?

Neither is automatically better; they focus on different tasks. Start with PhotoCraft for image editing and VectorCraft for vector illustration, then test the specific workflow you need.

Are both apps free?

Yes. Both are offered as free, open-source Crafting Apps. Their code, assets and branding may have separate license notices.

Can PhotoCraft convert JPG to SVG?

Do not infer a complete tracing workflow from its shape and path tools alone. VectorCraft explicitly documents image tracing; our separate browser converter also creates SVG paths from supported raster images.

Can I run them online immediately?

The official releases provide self-hostable web packages. We have not verified official hosted editors for these two apps, so downloading the web build still involves setup.
