What is PhotoCraft?
PhotoCraft focuses on image and photo editing: working with pixels, layers, masks and adjustments. It also has documented shape and path capabilities, so describing it as incapable of vector work would be misleading. VectorCraft places vector illustration and image tracing at the center of its workflow.
This guide uses PhotoCraft v0.7.0 as its versioned reference. Its README lists 55 tools; counts on the changing main branch can differ.
Features and development status below are based on official documentation reviewed on October 11, 2026. We have not independently tested these applications.

PhotoCraft key features
Layers and masks
The project lists layered editing, masks and adjustments for building an image from several elements. These tools are relevant when an edit should affect only part of a picture or remain separate from the original layer.
PSD support
PSD workflows are documented, but the roadmap also records exchange and compatibility limitations. Keep the original file and test a copy through an open-edit-export-reopen cycle before using PhotoCraft in an existing Photoshop pipeline.
Color tools, brushes and paths
The official feature list includes retouching and color tools, text, brushes, shapes and paths. That breadth does not establish that every feature behaves identically to another editor.
How to download PhotoCraft
PhotoCraft for Windows
Choose the Windows package from the official releases. Match the architecture and read the current installation and release notes.
PhotoCraft for Mac
Use the macOS release listed by the project. Follow its current verification instructions and your operating system’s security guidance; this guide has not independently verified the binary’s signing or notarization.
PhotoCraft for Linux
The releases include Linux packages, and the repository documents building from source. Check requirements for your distribution and use the package appropriate to your machine.
Can I use PhotoCraft online?
The self-hosted web build
The official project provides a WebAssembly package for self-hosting. It is a downloadable build that needs setup, not a verified official hosted PhotoCraft editor. Browser capabilities and memory limits may differ from desktop builds.
PhotoCraft GitHub and open source
The official source is storytold/photocraft on GitHub. The repository includes development instructions, issues and the roadmap. Code is available under MIT or Apache-2.0; bundled assets and ArtCraft brand materials have separate notices.
Is PhotoCraft really free?
Yes. PhotoCraft is offered as a free, open-source Crafting App. That statement concerns the application, not every service sold under the ArtCraft name. The ArtCraft AI studio has separate generation and credit terms.
Use the project’s official links to check current releases. Public source code can be inspected, but free and open source are not substitutes for verifying the software you download.
PhotoCraft vs Photoshop
The important question is whether your actual edit and file exchange work. Test layers, masks, fonts, color adjustments and any PSD features that your project needs. Do not infer complete Photoshop compatibility from the presence of a PSD import option.
PhotoCraft’s official documentation describes early development and professional-workflow gaps. This guide does not assign a quality winner, repeat an unverified subscription price or claim that a new editor is easier for every user.
PhotoCraft and ArtCraft: what is the relationship?
If you searched “photocraft artcraft,” PhotoCraft is one of the independent Crafting Apps made by the ArtCraft team. ArtCraft itself is the team’s AI image and video studio. The names identify related products, not interchangeable applications.
PhotoCraft review: is it worth trying?
This is a documentation-based overview, not an independent hands-on review. A useful evaluation is a small copy of a project you already know: open it, perform the required edits, export it and compare the result in your usual software.
Choose based on that evidence and the current roadmap. We do not present a community verdict, download-safety guarantee or unsupported claim that it outperforms Photoshop or GIMP.
PhotoCraft vs VectorCraft: which one do you need?
PhotoCraft centers on image editing; VectorCraft centers on vector illustration. Both can contain overlapping features. If your end goal is a traced SVG, focus on the image-tracing workflow rather than treating the distinction as “all pixels” versus “no pixels.”
Need a quick image edit now?
Our separate browser image editor crops, resizes and exports a JPG, PNG or static WebP locally. It is free with unlimited edits and no signup. Use this focused tool for a small task now, and choose PhotoCraft when you need its full editing workspace.
Frequently asked questions
Is PhotoCraft safe to download?
We cannot guarantee a binary’s safety from its open-source status. Use the official releases and follow the project’s current verification instructions. We have not independently tested the downloaded applications.
Is PhotoCraft available on Windows, Mac and Linux?
Yes, official release assets exist for those platforms. Check current system and architecture requirements; download availability is not a claim that we tested every platform.
Can PhotoCraft edit PSD files?
PSD workflows are documented, with compatibility limits. Keep a backup and test representative files, including reopening exports in the software you collaborate with.
Is PhotoCraft better than GIMP?
This guide does not establish a winner. Compare the current versions using your own editing task and required file formats; we have not run a hands-on comparison.
Does PhotoCraft only work with pixels?
No. Pixel editing is its main focus, but documented tools also include shapes and paths. VectorCraft is the more directly relevant app for a vector-illustration or tracing workflow.
