What is WordCraft?
WordCraft targets document writing and layout. Its v0.5.0 documentation describes DOCX reading and writing, a ribbon interface, styles, tables, track changes, references and mail merge. These are the project’s documented capabilities, not features we have independently tested. This page reviews official sources on October 12, 2026 and helps you choose a download and a useful first trial.
Part of the Crafting Apps family
The storytold/wordcraft repository identifies the ArtCraft team and links back to the official app page. GridCraft addresses spreadsheet work and DeckCraft addresses presentations. For example, a letter belongs in WordCraft, a budget in GridCraft and a slide deck in DeckCraft. Their related names do not make them interchangeable editors.
How it fits the Crafting Apps
The original seven apps vs the new office trio
Our original guides cover the creative group: PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, DesignCraft, LightCraft, FilmCraft, EffectCraft and PdfCraft. WordCraft, GridCraft and DeckCraft extend the family into documents, spreadsheets and presentations. The current official directory lists twelve apps, also including SoundCraft and CADCraft; seven plus three is not the full current catalog.
One launcher, individual installs
ArtCraft Launcher gives you one place to choose apps, install the build for your computer and check for updates. Its own installer is separate from the app downloads it manages. WordCraft also has standalone packages: using the launcher is convenient, not a requirement to obtain the word processor.
Free and open source?
Free to use, open-source
WordCraft is offered as a free download. Its v0.5.0 code is available under MIT or Apache-2.0, while bundled assets and ArtCraft branding have separate notices. That code license is not permission to present a different site as official. WordCraft is also separate from the Studio’s AI generation plans.
Current status: alpha
The v0.5.0 README and roadmap explicitly identify alpha status. The roadmap lists work on real-world DOCX compatibility, preserving objects such as charts and SmartArt through a save, pagination, stability and native printing. These are version-specific project disclosures; a new release can change them.
For a practical check, duplicate a document containing your usual fonts, headings, table, page breaks and comments. Open it, edit a sentence, save, then reopen it in Word or the application used by the recipient. Compare page layout and editable content. A successful PDF export alone cannot prove the DOCX preserved every object.
Where to download
Official route
Start with the official WordCraft page or the Crafting Apps directory. Choose the launcher if you want central app management, or a standalone release for WordCraft alone. The app page checked for this guide references v0.5.0; use its current release links when downloading.
| Platform or task | Published download options |
|---|---|
| macOS | Universal application DMG for Apple silicon and Intel |
| Windows | x64, ARM64 or x86; MSI installer or portable ZIP |
| Linux | Distribution packages and portable formats for supported architectures |
| FreeBSD | x86_64 archive; read its runtime requirements |
| Browser deployment | WebAssembly ZIP to host yourself; hosting setup required |
Don't fall for third-party mirrors
Keep the developer and package type visible when choosing a download. A source archive is for development, a command-line tool is not the desktop editor, and a web ZIP needs a server. Prefer the official project’s release assets and checksum instructions. This is not a claim that every mirror is malicious, or that we have security-audited these installers.
After installation, try a disposable copy before relying on a shared or important document. Record the version, platform and any changed layout when reporting a problem. For the browser build, follow the self-hosting instructions; the Studio’s hosted app is a different service, not a verified hosted WordCraft editor.
Frequently asked questions
Is WordCraft part of ArtCraft?
Yes. The official app page and storytold/wordcraft repository identify it as a Crafting App from the ArtCraft team. Google PAIR’s writing project and the similarly named mobile games are separate products.
Is WordCraft free?
Yes. The official download is free and the code is open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, with separate asset and branding notices. Studio AI generation terms concern a different product.
Can WordCraft replace Microsoft Word today?
That depends on your documents and the version. The reviewed v0.5.0 is alpha with documented fidelity and workflow gaps. Test a copy through editing, saving and reopening before deciding whether it meets your actual work.
Is there a WordCraft web version?
Yes. The official release provides a WebAssembly ZIP for self-hosting on a static server. That download does not by itself provide a public hosted editor, and it is separate from the ArtCraft Studio web app.
What are GridCraft and DeckCraft?
They are related ArtCraft apps: GridCraft is a spreadsheet application aimed at Excel workflows; DeckCraft is a presentation application aimed at PowerPoint workflows. Check each project’s own release and compatibility limits.
