How to convert PNG to SVG in 3 steps
1. Choose your image
Select or drop 1 JPG, PNG or WebP file up to 20 MB and 4 megapixels, with neither side longer than 8,192 pixels. For a transparent logo, select the original PNG export and trim unnecessary empty space. The file stays in your browser.
2. Adjust and convert
Start with the default settings, or adjust color detail and smoothing to see a quick preview. Click Convert to SVG for the full result. More color detail can preserve shading; stronger smoothing can simplify irregular edges.
3. Inspect and download
Compare the original and vector, then zoom in to inspect outlines and small gaps. Click Download SVG when the result is ready. If you change settings, convert again before downloading the updated file.
Prepare a transparent logo or icon for editing
A transparent icon or logo separates the subject from the background. Check that the background is actually transparent; a checkerboard saved into the pixels is still an image pattern and will be traced.
Transparent gaps and holes are part of the artwork. Inspect narrow gaps, lettering counters and semi-transparent edges against light and dark backgrounds. Soft transparency may be simplified into a different edge appearance.
Continue with editable paths
A trace is useful when you have a PNG export of your own logo but no vector master. Download it and refine nodes, corners or alignment in a vector editor. If exact brand geometry matters, use the trace as a starting point for manual cleanup.
Lettering is traced as shapes rather than restored to an editable font. Recreate text in an editor when you need to change its wording or typeface.
What is PNG to SVG conversion?
PNG stores pixels, even when its background is transparent. PNG to SVG conversion traces the visible regions into scalable shapes. Transparency alone does not make a PNG a vector.
A clean PNG is often useful for tracing because lossless storage avoids JPEG compression patches. It still needs enough source detail: a small pixelated PNG cannot reveal an outline that was never recorded.
Is vector the same thing as SVG?
Vector describes artwork made with geometry; SVG is one format for storing it. This PNG to vector converter outputs SVG paths, not AI, EPS or PDF files. Download the SVG and use a compatible vector editor when you need another format or precise changes to individual curves.
PNG to SVG here vs Illustrator
Use this browser tool when your immediate goal is a traced SVG without installing or learning an editor. Illustrator provides a larger vector-editing workspace for manually adjusting the trace afterward. That is a different amount of control, rather than a guarantee of identical output.
| Workflow | This PNG converter | Illustrator |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Choose a file in this page | Open the image in the editor |
| Refine | Color detail and smoothing | Tracing and manual vector-editing tools |
| Continue | Download SVG for another tool | Continue in the editing workspace |
What about VectorCraft?
VectorCraft is another vector editor whose documented tools include tracing and path editing. You can use this converter for the first trace, then use an editor to move nodes or rebuild corners. Check the editor’s current format support and limits before choosing that workflow.
At a glance
| What you need to know | This converter |
|---|---|
| Input | 1 JPG, JPEG, PNG or WebP image, up to 20 MB (20,000,000 bytes). |
| Image dimensions | Up to 4 megapixels (4,000,000 pixels), with neither side longer than 8,192 pixels. |
| Output | An SVG made of vector paths, with no watermark. |
| Price | Free, unlimited conversions, no signup or credit card. |
| Processing | On your device, inside your browser. Images are not uploaded. |
| Time | Depends on the image, settings and your device. Progress follows the real conversion. |
| Best source | A clear logo, icon, illustration or line drawing. Photos become simplified artwork. |
Is it free?
Yes. You can make unlimited conversions without creating an account, entering a card or unlocking a download. The SVG has no added watermark.
Each task handles one image up to 20 MB and 4 megapixels, with a maximum side length of 8,192 pixels. File and device limits protect browser stability; they do not create a daily conversion allowance. Conversion uses local tracing, with no LLM request.
Why does my transparent edge look different?
Semi-transparent anti-aliasing softens pixel edges. Tracing redraws that transition as vector shapes, so a soft edge is not always identical. Use the comparison and zoom controls instead of judging a tiny thumbnail.
If a halo appears, check whether the source was exported against a colored background. Re-export the original artwork with clean transparency if possible. Keep the original PNG for soft shadows or photographic transparency that tracing cannot faithfully preserve.
What happens to my image?
The conversion runs locally in your browser. Your image, filename and SVG content are not sent to a conversion server or an AI model.
Recent history shows up to 20 small thumbnails from the past 7 days on this device. Older entries are cleared when you open the converter again, and you can clear history yourself. A thumbnail cannot restore the original image or downloaded SVG. The service may collect limited usage metadata separately, but does not send images with those events.
Need a full vector editor?
This page handles image tracing. For drawing new shapes, editing individual nodes or arranging a larger design, a vector editor gives you more control after conversion. Read our independent VectorCraft guide to understand that workflow.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to the transparent background?
Empty transparent areas remain transparent rather than receiving a solid background. Semi-transparent details may be simplified, so inspect the SVG against both light and dark backgrounds.
Is PNG better than JPG for a logo trace?
A clean PNG is often a better starting point for a logo because it avoids JPEG compression artifacts and can keep transparency. The clarity of the original artwork matters more than the extension alone.
Does PNG to vector conversion give me EPS or AI?
This converter outputs SVG. Vector is the type of artwork; SVG is the format used here. Use a compatible vector editor if you need EPS, AI or PDF export.
Will text remain editable as text?
No. Traced lettering becomes paths. To change the wording or font later, recreate the text in a vector editor.
Which file formats can I convert?
JPG, JPEG, PNG and WebP are supported. Choose one file up to 20 MB and 4 megapixels, with a maximum side length of 8,192 pixels; output is SVG. PDF, GIF, HEIC and SVG input are not supported.
Do you upload or store my image?
No image is uploaded to or stored on our server. Conversion runs on your device. Local history shows small thumbnails from the past 7 days and clears older entries when you return; you can clear it anytime. It does not retain original files or SVG content.
Can I convert more than one image?
Yes, one at a time with unlimited conversions. Download the current result, then use Convert another image. There is no signup or daily conversion allowance.
Can I use the SVG commercially?
We charge no additional license fee for the output. You still need the appropriate rights to the original artwork, including any logos, fonts or other protected material it contains.
Does this work on a phone?
The converter is designed for current mobile browsers. Large or complex images can exceed a phone’s available memory; use a smaller source if processing fails. Saving the result follows your browser’s download controls.
