A native application with a reusable engine

The v0.7.0 documentation describes an engine-led design, a document model, an egui interface and CPU/GPU compositing paths. Read this as a description of the project’s structure. From a user’s perspective, the useful question remains whether an operation responds well and produces the file you need on your own computer.

What does the performance number mean?

The project reports a Gaussian blur with radius 180 on a 3.6-megapixel image taking under one second. This is an official v0.7.0 claim, reviewed on October 11, 2026, not a measurement we reproduced. It concerns one operation under the project’s conditions; it is not a promised time for every filter, document or device.

Rust versus an Electron interface

A language or interface framework is only one part of a graphics application. Image dimensions, layers, filter algorithms, graphics drivers and the export format all affect what you experience. Comparing the labels “Rust” and “Electron” alone skips those variables. A useful comparison uses the same file and edit, records the hardware, and distinguishes loading time from editing and export time.

Why WebAssembly matters

Compiling to WebAssembly provides a way to run the application engine in a browser, but a web bundle still has hosting and browser requirements. It does not automatically create an official hosted PhotoCraft service. Use the version-matched packaging document if you plan to deploy it. We have not run that deployment as part of this guide.

Choose the smallest workflow that meets your need

A quick crop or resize does not require you to evaluate a programming language. Our separate browser image editor handles those edits locally and shows the actual output dimensions and size. If you are choosing a full editor, try one representative project and inspect the result before drawing conclusions from architecture or a headline benchmark.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rust guarantee that PhotoCraft is faster?

No. Performance depends on the workload, algorithms, build and hardware, and needs a defined comparison.

Did you reproduce the blur timing?

No. The timing is explicitly attributed to the PhotoCraft v0.7.0 documentation.

Can Rust code run in a browser?

The project provides a WebAssembly build. Its own web packaging instructions explain the deployment route.
